Pollack Fishing Experience
-
March-May sees the fish moving from pre-spawn to post-spawn, often holding in deeper water. These fish are generally lean and hungry. With water temperatures still down, a larger lure moving slow on the bottom or reaction-style baits yield best results.
-
June-August and the warming sea allows the fish to move into shallower water where they are active, chasing sandeels and small baitfish. They can become finicky with an abundance of bait around however, as they can be found in an variety of locations, a number of different style marks can be fished successfully. They can also be targeted on surface lures at this time, especially in late summer.
-
During September-November the sea starts to cool and the fish become most active, as they prepare to put on weight for spawning. They begin to feed heavily and can be caught in numbers in the shallows, often on a variety of lures - this can be the best period for surface fishing. Late Autumn is often regarded as the best period for pollack fishing in general.
-
December-February. This is when the fish start moving into spawning mode and start to migrate to deeper water. December still sees active fishing in the shallows and the possibility of surface fishing, and January and February allows us to target the largest specimens in deep water.
When to Fish
Pollack can be targeted on lures year-round. Shallow-water fishing including catching them on topwater is best in the Summer/Autumn and deep water for the largest specimens is best in the Winter.
